Meat Industry Changes Labels

April 14, 2013 2 comments

The powers that be are re-labeling meat and pork in an effort to increase sales. No mention of point of origin, grain fed, pasture raised or of what additives may be in the product. No mention of slaughter dates either or if the product was previously frozen. It also fails to mention of the meat was irradiated in an attempt to kill bacteria and ecoli.

Apparently chicken will still be called chicken.

“Pork chops are now ribeyes as US meat industry renames cuts”

Excerpt —

* New names for more than 350 cuts of beef, pork

* Names aimed at whetting consumer appetites for meat

* A top sirloin beef cut is now coulotte

BBQ fans, brace yourselves: “Pork butt” will soon be a thing of the past.

In an effort to boost sales just ahead of the U.S. grilling season, and make shopping at the meat counter a bit easier, the pork and beef industries are retooling more than 350 names of meat cuts to give them more sizzle and consumer appeal.

Overseas demand for U.S. meat has cooled as both Russia and China have concerns about possible traces of the feed additive ractopamine, which is used to make meat leaner. That has protein clogging the nation’s supply chain and the supply pork and beef in commercial freezers hit a record high
